Samuel Lewis Spears, 96, of Ashland Ky, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Kingsbrook Lifecare Center. Samuel was born January 27, 1926 in Ashland, Ky a son of the late Joseph M. and Hazel Wellman Spears. Sam graduated from Catlettsburg High School in 1943, and Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1946. He started work in 1948 at Sears and retired in 1984. He held management jobs in Ashland, Ky, Marion, IN, Akron, Ohio and retired in Columbus Ohio in 1984. He served in the Korean War in the medics and served in Denver, Colorado and Kobe, Japan. After retiring he worked for 30 years with AARP and the IRS doing taxes and advising people about their taxes. He was of the Presbyterian faith and the oldest member of the Ashland Elks. He was a great sports fan and watched the Big Blue, he loved to swim at the YMCA where he would visit three to four times a week. Sam is preceded in death in addition to his parents by his wife whom he loved of over 60 years Ethel Louise Hall Spears, and two brothers Joseph M and John Page Spears. He is survived by his nephew Lindsay Thomas Hall, Jr. of Catlettsburg, Ky, nieces Brenda (Forrest) Spears Jackson of Covington, Ky, Sheldon (Jim) Spears Hagen of Cary, NC, and Lindsay Marie Hall DeRossett, a special friend Ron Elliott, special caregivers Robin (Mike) Vanhorn, several great nieces and nephews and a host of friends and great neighbors. A graveside service for Sam will be conducted Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 11 A.M. by Rev. Mark Kloha officiating in Catlettsburg Cemetery. A military service and Elks honor service will follow at the grave with burial to follow in Catlettsburg Cemetery. Lazear Funeral Home is both honored and privileged to have been entrusted with the care of Mr. Spears.
