June 3, 2026

Larry William Colegrove, age 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026, in his home after enjoying a good meal and receiving visits from his many loved ones. Larry came into this world on December 28, 1938, as one of seven children. He is preceded in death by his late mother, Mary Francis Arthur, and father, Sabre’ Scott Colegrove. He is survived by his two daughters, Mary (Steve) Huffman and Angie (Greg) Rice, as well as three grandchildren Macy Rice, Clint Thompson, and Loren Huffman, and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind countless friends and family members including Larry and Marlene Hardwick.

Larry was a man of service. He served his congregation as a beloved member of the Twin Fork Nazarene Church. He served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army, and he served the City of Ashland for 23 years before he retired from the Waste and Water Department.

He was an avid reader and keeper of knowledge, which was instilled in him during his young years at Hazel Green Academy. He often spoke of the fond memories and many friends that he made during his time there, but his heart was always with his Ashland Tomcats. Larry could be heard most Friday nights supporting his team in any way that he could, whether it was from the stands or next to his radio, but his selflessness did not end with his family, his town, or even his team. His greatest service was always to the Lord. He believed strongly in worshiping on Sunday and praising everyday through music, through kindness, and through action. He was always there to answer the call when he was needed, and there was no exception when the call came from the Lord. Larry rejoiced as he was finally called home to serve in a whole new way from heaven.

Services for Larry Colegrove will be held at the Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. by Pastor Jason Caudill with burial to follow in Ashland Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour before service time Thursday. Lazear Funeral Home is both honored and privileged to have been entrusted with the care of Mr. Colegrove.

June 1, 2026

Jill Moore, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted nurse, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, in Charlestown, Indiana. She was born on December 6, 1955, in Olive Hill, Kentucky, and lived a life defined by compassion, generosity, and unwavering love for her family.

Jill graduated from West Carter High School in 1973 and went on to build an extraordinary nursing career spanning more than 45 years. Jill retired in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional care and compassion. Many patients specifically requested her, a reflection of the trust, comfort, and kindness she brought to every interaction. To many cancer patients and their families, Jill was more than a nurse—she was a source of comfort, encouragement, and hope during some of life’s most difficult moments.

While Jill was a remarkable nurse, her most cherished roles were being called, a Wife, Mom, Mamaw, Grandma, and Gigi. Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her family.

She shared 50 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Brent Moore, and took immense pride in her children, Trent Moore (Amy) and Kayla Williams (Daniel). Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Amanda Moore, Ashley Vellinger (Nik), Hanna, Hadley, and Ellison, and her great-grandchildren, Rhett and Ruby.

Jill was preceded in death by her parents, George and Madge Miller, and her brother, Larry Miller. She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister Jen Very, brother Ronnie Miller, sister-in-law Edna Miller, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Those who knew Jill will remember her warm smile, positive outlook, and generous spirit. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures— “chopping the block” in her red Volkswagen Beetle back in the day, searching for treasures at thrift stores and antique shops, traveling to the Smoky Mountains and Michigan with her husband, cheering on the horses, and entering sweepstakes. She was also a gifted cook who loved bringing people together around her table, making sure no one ever left her home hungry.

More than anything, Jill will be remembered for the kindness she showed to everyone she met. Whether caring for patients, supporting friends, or loving her family, she gave of herself freely and wholeheartedly. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her compassion, strength, and love.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Grayson Funeral Home, 893 High Street, Charlestown, Indiana. Additional services will be under the direction of Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland. Jill’s second visitation will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Globe Christian Church, 79 Church Street, Olive Hill, KY. Her funeral service will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the church under the direction of Lazear Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Croix Hospice. Memories and messages of support may be shared at www.GraysonFuneralHome.com.

Both Funeral Homes are honored and privileged to have been entrusted with the care of Mrs. Moore.

Hermalee Wheeler Stevens
February 25, 1933 - May 3, 2026

Hermalee W. Stevens “Lee,”  93, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Ashland, Kentucky, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 3, 2026. Lee was born February 25, 1933 in Paintsville, Kentucky to Sherman and Mary Ellen “Ella” Wheeler. Lee graduated from Ashland High School and attended Transylvania University.
Lee lived a life of love, determination, fierce loyalty to family, centered on her faith in Jesus Christ.  Her influence and walk of faith inspired her family and others, as she was always ready to provide encouragement by her presence and prayers.
From an early age she was drawn to horses and her favorite was Billy.  She continued this passion throughout her life, as she enjoyed times spent as an adult showing her Arabian Horse, El Kalifa, alongside her trainers Bob and Jean Hart. In  1980 - 2007, Lee and Dana Zeller partnered to begin Equivisions Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program for children in the Ashland Community.
Lee pursued golf, with the same vigor and commitment as her other endeavors.  She had memorable moments at Bellefonte Country Club in the Women’s 18 Hole Golf League. In addition she enjoyed participating in tournaments locally as well as in Kiowa, South Carolina, and Bermuda.
Of course anyone who knew Lee appreciated her as an avid University of Kentucky Wildcat Fan.  She had UK Football Season Tickets from 1998 - 2012. For many of those seasons Lee and her sister, Bebe, would make the trip to Lexington for games, enjoying the food, fun, and fellowship of being part of Big Blue Nation. She attended many UK Basketball Games, as well, including trips to Atlanta, fondly called “Catlanta,” for the SEC Tournament.  When Lee moved to Mesa, Arizona, in 2018,  she continued to follow her UK Wildcats by subscribing to Cats Pause, listening to KSR Radio, and watching UK Sports. No matter her age, when people met Lee, they were amazed at her vast knowledge about her UK Wildcats, and her recall of games and players. Lee truly enjoyed all sports. She was a Bengals Season Ticket Holder from 1968 -1980, traveling to the games with her son, Greg. She remained a fan throughout life.
Entertaining family and friends brought her so much joy. She was an extraordinary hostess and cook, to which she credits her mother.  Each Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Birthday, as well as other occasions, were so memorable because of the love and festive atmosphere she created.
Lee was a devoted student of the Bible. Reading God’s Word daily was a top priority. In the 1980’s - 2010 she attended Community Bible Study, which was a true joy in her life.  She valued the Bible Study each week, as well as the friendships and fellowship. Lee was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, Westwood, Kentucky. During her years in Arizona she attended North Phoenix Baptist Church.
Lee was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Ella Wheeler; her husband, Thomas E. Stevens; her son, George Gregory Stevens; her grandson, Braden Gregory Stevens; and seven siblings.  She is survived by her son, Rev. Thomas E. Stevens and his wife, Debbie, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and daughter, Debbi Stevens of Mesa, Arizona; three grandchildren, Thomas Eugene III, Eric Hampton, and Alexis Madison; and two great-grandchildren, Elora Kiana and Hallie Anne; siblings; Charles Wheeler, George Wheeler, Mary Lou Wheeler Allen, Regina Wheeler Adams.  Lee loved and was loved by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Icie “Midge” Stapleton Browning
February 10, 1936 – October 29, 2025

We are sad to announce that Icie Stapleton Browning, 89, gracefully and peacefully went to her eternal rest on October 29, 2025 at The Lantern at Morning Pointe in Russell, Kentucky after a prolonged illness.
Midge, as she was affectionately known, was born February 10, 1936 in Estill County, Kentucky a daughter of the late Walker and Alice Cox Reece. She was a devoted wife, mother, mammaw and aunt to her beloved family. While she will be deeply missed and Midge’s family will mourn her physical absence, her passing has only strengthened and amplified her loving presence in our lives. When the initial hurt of her loss has subsided, we will remember her with smiles on our faces, rather than tears in our eyes. Midge was devoted to her family, raising her sons in Ashland, Kentucky and working in retail stores over the years at G.C. Murphy Co., C.H. Parsons, Proffitt’s and Belk’s Department Stores. She loved to dance and could often be found at various dance events in the area.
Midge was married to Floyd Stapleton for 33 years until his death in 1988. She later met and was married to Elmer E. “Buddy” Browning for 9 years until his death in 2009.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Midge was predeceased by her infant son, Charles Ray Stapleton and her siblings, Lonzel Reece, Della Mays, Isabell Gross, Christine Isaacs, Jurldean Carroll, Eudell Lickliter, and Edessa Marie Isaacs.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Randy Stapleton of Ashland, Kentucky and Anthony Stapleton (Tammy) of Flatwoods, Kentucky; her grandchildren Tiffany Hickman (Isaac) of Lexington, Kentucky, Samuel Stapleton (Yin Yin) of Seattle, Washington, Kayla Stapleton of Flatwoods, Kentucky and Zachary Stapleton of Flatwoods, Kentucky; her great-grandchildren, Ellie Hickman and Trace Stapleton; and numerous nieces and nephews whom she adored, loved and cherished. She also leaves many friends, coworkers and neighbors who shared good times with her over the years and for whom she held great affection. Her family thanks all of those who were friends and companions in her many exploits throughout the years.
Midge’s family is thankful and grateful for the loving care and attention provided by all of the staff at Morning Pointe Senior Living and the Lantern at Morning Pointe and by the nurses and caregivers at Ashland Community Hospice.
In accordance with Midge’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. Internment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Park with her family in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, which Midge always referred to as a “waste of money,” please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Ashland Community Hospice in remembrance of her.
Lazear Funeral Home is entrusted to care for Midge.

Nikiah was a one-of-a-kind wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. To know her made your life better as she loved with her whole heart and never hesitated to help anyone in need. She will be remembered for her quick wit and unique sense of humor, her gift for making everyone feel welcome, and her unforgettable cooking and baking that always brought everyone together. August 8, 2025

It takes a village… and right now, our village is grieving.

Brent Patrick Lueken, age 45, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving brother, sisters, and devoted parents, who dedicated their lives to caring for their son with a developmental disability. Brent was born in Louisville, KY, on April 28, 1980, and grew up in Ashland, KY, where he lived with his family.

Mostly non-verbal, Brent had an extraordinary gift for understanding and playing any handheld video game. He loved his Xbox and watching TV, and he could always find the right sports channel for his parents when they couldn’t. A true sports fan, he cheered for nearly every sport but held a special love for the UofL Cardinals, UK Wildcats, the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, WWE, NASCAR, and college athletics. He was also known for his simple joys: chicken nuggets, fries, and a cold Coke Zero—earning him the nickname “Chicken Man.”

Brent’s presence in the Boyd County schools helped other students with disabilities, thanks to his parents’ tireless advocacy. Their efforts, along with the dedication of wonderful teachers, led to the creation of appropriate classrooms for students with disabilities. Brent was in the first Peer Tutor class at Boyd County High School, and many of those students went on to become physical, speech, and occupational therapists, or special education teachers. His life made a difference to people who may never even know his name, and his legacy of advocacy continues for all who need a voice.

He traveled widely with his family but was happiest at Holden Beach—playing in the waves, feeding seagulls, and searching for seashells with his loved ones. He had a gentle presence and a powerful soul, always reminding us what truly matters in life: family, love, and savoring each moment.

He loved his family deeply and returned that love tenfold. Brent is survived by his beloved parents, Patrick and Mary Anne Lueken; his sisters, Laura Bradley (Bill) and Kari Purvis (Mike); and his brother, Kyle Lueken. He is also survived by his cherished nephew, Connor McManus (“Con Con”), and his adoring nieces—Taylor McManus (“Tay Tay”), Morgan Bradley (“Mo Mo”), and Kennedy Bradley (“Nuh Nuh Nuh”). All of them loved “Uncle Brent” dearly and brought out the very best in him.

He shared a special bond with his Mawmaw and Pawpaw, who were among his biggest supporters and closest companions. We find comfort in knowing they are now reunited, holding each other close.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers who supported Brent over the years, with special gratitude to Dawn, whose loving presence and bond with Brent was irreplaceable. He was also blessed by the love and support of Uncle Dave and Aunt Lea, who became his Ashland family. He leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, and extended family who enriched his life deeply and many friends from Pathway’s and A Brighter Future.

Even while living with cancer, Brent embraced life with humor, connection, and grace. He showed us how to live fully without needing to say a word.

A celebration of Brent’s life will be held in October for all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Hildegard House (P.O. Box 5613, Louisville, KY 40255), a nonprofit organization that offers end-of-life care and a home for individuals without a home or loved ones, allowing them to die with dignity.

Brent, thank you for teaching us how to love better, laugh louder, and live more simply. We will carry your light with us always.

Memories and stories are still being told. Joan was an avid walker and swimmer. After her husband passed in 2004, her children continued the tradition for many summers and took her and her little dog, Jessie, to Cave Run.

Left to cherish her memory are her ten children,

In addition to her children, Joan was blessed to have wonderful dedicated caregivers throughout the past ten years, including Becky Layne, Kim Kent, Josh Stephens, Billie (Kate) Brown and Darlene Carter.  Community Hospice of Ashland provided compassionate in-home services in her final months.

Robbie Darren Roberts
January 24, 1968 – June 8, 2025

Robbie Darren Roberts, 57, of Ashland, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his home on June 8, 2025. Born January 24, 1968, in Ironton, Ohio, Robbie lived a life full of laughter, generosity, and unshakable love for those around him.

Robbie often called himself a “Jack of all trades, master of none,” but those who knew him would say he mastered the art of living fully. Whether on a job site or in a salesroom, he brought energy, humor, and an unmatched work ethic. He had a gift for taking new coworkers under his wing, always ready to share what he knew and build them up with encouragement. If he was selling, he was leading — and you’d often hear him say he could sell a blind woman a car. And honestly, we believe he could have.

A born talker, Robbie never met a stranger. He could hold court in any room, often without seeming to take a breath, and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. But above all, Robbie loved his family and friends fiercely and wholeheartedly.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janelle Roberts; his children Drew Roberts and wife Eleata, Brock Roberts, Amanda Roberts and her two children Makayla Roberts and TaiVon Mestel, and his youngest daughter Ericha Roberts. He is also survived by his siblings Daniel Roberts and Dreama Roberts. He is also remembered by many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends from near and far.

Robbie was preceded in death by his mother, Lana D. Kuhn, and his father, Charles M. Roberts.

Arrangements are being handled by Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland, Kentucky. In accordance with Robbie’s wishes, he will be cremated, and there will be no formal service at this time.

As a tribute to Robbie, his family and friends would like to encourage you to donate to your local church or non profit organization. Robbie was passionate about volunteering and helping others and made an impact on those he worked with at Hillcrest-Bruce Mission.

Daddy, there are so many people who loved you. Until we see you again.

Michael Dowling
The Honorable Judge Michael Ross Dowling, 85, of Ashland, KY, died on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods. Mr. Dowling, the great-grandson of The Honorable Judge John D. Ross, the first judge of Boyd County, KY, was born May 13, 1938, in Ashland.  He was the youngest of three children born to the late Michael Joseph Dowling and Frances Elizabeth Riffe Dowling.
Mr. Dowling was a lifelong member of Holy Family Church and a 1955 graduate of Holy Family School.  He graduated from the University of Detroit (now University of Detroit Mercy) with an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and then graduated with a law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC where he worked in the United States Patent & Trademark Office before returning to Kentucky to practice law. He was admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association on his birthday, May 13, 1966.  He began his law career with the Ashland firm of Diederich, Hermansdorfer & Wilhoit. Mr. Dowling was elected Police Judge for the city of Ashland in November 1972.
Michael Dowling often worked pro bono.  He believed in helping those who could not help themselves. He was astonishingly generous with his time and money.  He believed most people were good and that a person who was struggling was one of “God’s misguided children.”  His home, at the corner of 17thStreet & Montgomery Avenue, was built by and has been occupied by the Dowling family since 1904; in it, he often housed displaced relatives and friends.
Mr. Dowling was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds, the University of Kentucky Wildcats, and thoroughbred horse racing. He enjoyed travel—especially road trips. He frequented the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Bardstown, KY and he made many pilgrimages to Ireland. He also visited the Holy Land.  Mr. Dowling was a citizen of both the United States and Ireland. After one of his trips to Ireland, he returned home with his first of several Irish Setters, named “Monruad Mazurka.”  This was the beginning of his lifelong affection for the breed.
Michael R. Dowling was a member of the Boyd County Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the Society of the Holy Name, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Elks Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus. He is predeceased by his brother, James Joseph Dowling, and his sister, Marcia Dowling Mabley. Michael is survived by his niece, Frances L. Mabley of Ashland; his nephew, James Michael Mabley of Ashland; his great-niece Rachel E. Hannah Persson (Karl, their children Stellan & Ingrid) of Park City, UT; and his Riffe and Gallion cousins, here and abroad.
The family extends a sincere thank you to many friends and family, especially to the Gallions for their considerable kindness to Michael. Michael Ross Dowling was fiercely loved and enormously valued.  His departure has left an ache in our hearts that will never heal. He was the best of us. Until we meet again, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Friends and family are invited to call, Saturday, January 6th, 2024, to Holy Family Church from 10am-11am. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11am by V. Rev. D. Andrew Garner, KHS.
